Description
The starting point is at the beginning of the road that leads to Il Poggio, which you meet on the provincial road to Frontone just outside Cagli and before the Acquaviva roundabout.
The road is initially paved. As you ascend, you immediately come across the Il Poggio restaurant, followed by the few houses of the village of the same name. To the right (west), the view opens towards Antiata, while to the left (east), towards Frontone.
After a series of curves, now on a dirt road, you reach the Villa Colticciola farmhouse. From here, continue in this direction. Walking on level ground, you pass the ruins of Ca Beati Fossi, then turn east, reaching the Castle of Frontone. Along the way, you'll come across a recently built drinking fountain.
The dirt road ends on the road that climbs Mount Catria, near the Parish Church of Santo Stefano, in Montione. Evidence of this church dates back to 1202. It was restored in 1783 following a violent earthquake and is now abandoned.
A small road descends next to the church, offering views of the Fosso della Canala Valley to the right. Once you reach the village of Cabaldi, turn left onto an old tree-lined path that leads back toward Cagli. Before turning, continue for a hundred meters or so to admire a towering oak tree next to a beautiful stone building.
The tree-lined path joins the Cagli-Acquaviva provincial road just before a roundabout. You can avoid the paved road by walking on the adjacent grassy verge. At the end of the descent and across a bridge, you return to the starting point.
