Description
Paravento is a hamlet of Cagli along the road to Frontone, on the watershed between the Metauro and Cesano rivers, mentioned for the first time in a Fonte Avellana document from 1082.
It is a small, well-preserved village known for its living nativity scene. In June 1944, it was the scene of a battle between Nazi-Fascist forces and partisans from the Pisacane detachment of the Garibaldi Brigade. Partisan Mario Sabatini was killed during the battle, and following the subsequent roundup by the Nazi-Fascists, two civilians were killed: Francesco Blasi and Giovanni Caccia.
Leave your car near the Giardino di Don Michele, a terrace with a magnificent view of Frontone Castle and the small village of Collelungo, where there is also a beautiful monument commemorating the Battle of Paravento.
Pass the small church of San Michele Arcangelo and the paved road, then turn left onto a comfortable dirt road, initially narrow between the woods and a fence. Along the way, you'll come across a plaque commemorating partisan Mario Sabatini and a panel illustrating the events of the Battle of Paravento. This section is shared with the Cammino dei Cappuccini and will take you to Buonconsiglio, passing near the hamlet of Ca' d'Eusepio and through the few houses of Caeggiole.
Cross the Cagli-Frontone provincial road, turn left and, after a few meters, right, onto a wide dirt road. The initial stretch offers a beautiful view of the village of Buonconsiglio and Frontone Castle.
The road skirts a small wooded hill and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and the peaks of the Apennine ridge, from Monte Acuto to Monte Nerone, passing through Monte Campifobio.
Unfortunately, to return to Paravento, you'll have to travel about 700 meters along the provincial road. For your safety, stay on the left side of the road, which has little traffic.
At the turnoff for Paravento, turn left and return to the starting point. However, I recommend not starting right away, but taking a quick tour of the houses in Paravento, the center of which is about 200 meters from where you parked your car, continuing along the road.
