Description
The starting point is Ponte Petrella, a small bridge over the Balbano stream. From here, climb up towards the small hamlet of I Conti, then turn left and descend towards the Pieve di San Crescentino. This Romanesque church was built around the year 1000, although some evidence suggests it dates back to the Carolingian era, predating its construction by two centuries.
From the small church, proceed towards Pian di Balbano and, shortly after crossing the Balbano stream, turn left onto a dirt road. From here, a pleasant climb begins, with gentle gradients. The dominant feature of the landscape is Monte Nerone, to your right.
About a kilometer after passing the ruins of Casa Aiale, the road bends to the left (east) to reach the highest point from which the return journey begins, all downhill.
You pass two elegant homes in Sant'Apollinare and continue downhill, still on a dirt road, through fields and woods, passing Caicenti and Casa Sterpeto. Ahead of you is Mount Petrano and the Burano Valley, while to your right emerge the peaks of Mount Acuto and Mount Catria.
At the end of the descent you returned to your car and the starting point.
